Nnedi Okorafor: Magic, Myth, Morality and the future book cover

Multiple award winning Africanfuturist writer Nnedi Okorafor was born in the United States. Her educated parents had come to the US to escape a war in Nigeria. Beginning in grade school it became safe for her parents to take the family back to her father’s home village but with armed guards. Nnedi spent considerable time there as she was growing up, often suffering prejudice for her American ways. Back home going to school in a Chicago suburb, she also experienced bigotry for being Black. She planned to be an entomologist and a professional tennis player but after routine spinal surgery temporarily paralyzed her from the waist down, she took her first creative writing class. In the next few years, she created her own alternate universe where magic is real, some people can fly, and death is not always final.
